Comparison of the production and consumption of energy in the European Union

The European Union has been linked to the energy sector from the beginning. However, it is worth noting that this area is still a shared competence in the integration. The European Union has many challenges in the field of energy policy, such as increasing import dependence, limited diversification, increased energy demand, climate change, the lack of renewable energy sources, and shortcomings in the integration of energy markets. Among these, energy dependence is largely determined by the evolution of energy consumption. Thoughts on the new Guidelines on State aid for climate, environmental protection and energy

In January 2022, the new Guidelines on state aid for climate, environmental protection and energy 2022 (’CEEAG’) will replace the Guidelines on State aid regarding environmental protection and energy 2014-2020 (’EEAG’). The Commission intends to align the new guidelines with the EU’s objectives and targets set out in the European Green Agreement and with regulatory reforms in the fields of energy and the environmental protection, while extending the scope of soft law to climate protection. Another step in the EDF v Commission Case – The General Court of the EU upheld the unfavourable decision for the french company

Despite several decades of application, the concept of the state aid is still not well defined enough and continues to generate extended legal battles throughout the European Union. This is well illustrated by a Judgment in Case T-747/15 of the General Court of the EU released January 16, 2018, confirming that the Commission had correctly applied the state aid rules to order France to require Électricité de France (EDF) to pay back €1.37 billion.
